Mary met Bob Stuart who was a Delaware State policeman at the time, and the two immediately fell in love.
Services are in the care of Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Seaford. She was also queen bee of the Red Hat Ladies and a charter member of the Laurel Alumni Association. She was a believer and lived by example practicing unconditional love, forgiveness, and service to family, friends and fellow mankind. As a skilled entertainer and dexterous cook, Mary could simultaneously transition an impromptu cocktail party of 20 into a sumptuous sit-down dinner in a matter of a few hours. Mary was raised in her grandfather’s country store, her bassinet on the counter and later grew up working in the store with her father, mother and older brother.
She loved to play cards with her friends and family. Otwell (Jan) of Laurel; her daughters, Debbie Carter (Rusty) of Federalsburg, Md. Tragically, Mary lost her older brother Billy to a car accident when she was 14.
Pat is survived by her children, Sheila Marine, Robert “Buddy” Short and his wife Laurie and Marsha Middleton, all of Laurel; three grandchildren, Jaime Marine, Rob Marine and Robert “Gator” Short Jr.; two great-grandsons, J. Moore and Waylon Short; two sisters, Ginny Whaley and Darlene Morgan; and one sister-in-law, Irene King. Flaudine was born in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of the late John and Catherine Cropper.
Raised in the country store, she tended the cash register, pumped gas and cut meat and whatever else was needed.
She learned people skills and communication very early on which served her well as she continued honing these skills throughout her life.
Jack was a Stamford resident for many years, moving to Norwalk in 1984.
Upon retirement in 2006, Jack and Sandy moved to Seaford.
